Join us for a classic Chicago Media Project experience: the Big Table Dinner - but for Brunch! This exclusive event will feature a feast from the fantastic chefs at Soho House Chicago and pitches from three outstanding documentaries-in-progress. Each of these three highlights a key social issue using empathy, warmth, and humor in documentary storytelling, and we're so proud to have them represented at the pitch session!
- MINDING THE GAP: Filmmaker and skateboarder Bing Liu returns to his hometown to explore his childhood through two younger skateboarders’ relationships with their fathers, and in the process tries to make sense of his own tumultuous childhood as an immigrant, skateboarder, and waif. Bing Liu of Chicago's own Kartemquin Films will present the pitch for this very probing, personal story.
- STEP: the moving story of a group of teenage girls from inner city Baltimore – one of the most violent communities in urban America – who have embraced step dancing as a way to bring passion, ambition, rigor and inspiration into their lives. Broadway producer and first-time feature director Amanda Lipitz will pitch her dynamic documentary.
- HEART OF WHITENESS: a six-part hybrid series about a conservative woman's journey as she confronts an America that she no longer recognizes. Taking place in the months leading up to the U.S. presidential election, the series combines documentary-style scripted scenes with improvisation in real life situations. Filmmaker and writerGrace Lee will pitch this boundary-pushing hybrid doc/fiction series.
